G17 or G19?

I've been looking at full size, hi-cap 9mm's lately and think I'm going with Glock. Now the question is G17 or G19, any opinions?

G19 is the CREAM OF THE CROP of Glocks, in my opinion. The size is just right, you can use G17 mags (or G18!) if you want the capacity. I've owned G17, G19, G20, G22, G23, G26, G27, and G29. I enjoyed the G19 best of them all - something about it was "just right". I don't currently own any Glocks, but my next handgun purchase will be another G19 - it's the one I miss.

P.S. If you're looking for a high-cap 9mm polymer gun, don't overlook the H&K P2000 if you can afford it. VERY nice gun!

Depends on hand/body size.

If you can palm a ball G-17 if not G-19

For example:

I am 5' 7" and propoetionate body size I wear medium size work gloves a G-19 is perfect for me. I can hide it well on me and it fits my hand fine without crowding the pinkie finger to much on the grip.

Re: G17 or G19?

I first considered the G19 but for hi-cap 9mm's I went with two G23s so I can change between 4 different calibers for fun in each. The 40sw barrel comes out and the 9mm and 357 lonewolf barrels take literally 30 secs to change in for about $100 each. Then grab a bunch of the 33 round victory mags for 9mm and 40sw for $15 a pop(357 works in the 40sw mags) then recently added a 22lr conversion kit, four in one is nice ^_^

I thought that you were looking at the FNP-9? It has gotten nothing but positive reviews (even Nutnfancy did a nice long one on this pistol). FNP's history is solid as a rock and I think they put out top notch product. Personally I really like the FNP and it would be top of my list if they made a more compact model. Even though the full size of the FNP is comfortable for me, I only have one pistol right now and it has to serve multiple purposes and I think that concealability will be a plus.

FWIW, I've been looking seriously at semi-auto 9mm pistols recently and I am looking really hard at the G19. I find the G17 a little large for everyday and the G26 too small. The G-19 wasn't my first choice and I don't find it to be the best in terms or ergonomics, capacity, or preferred safety features when measured against it's competition. But it does have a lot of things going for it, including it's reliability which speaks volumes. I have no doubts that it would perform when called upon. The availability of aftermarket products and accessories is also a huge bonus. You can basically re-build a pistol to suit any specifications and OEM Glock parts are widely available. Not too many other platforms except the 1911 can say that. Another plus is that in a SHTF scenario, there's bouind to be replacement parts available since everyone has a Glock.

In terms of size - I agree with what mightymanx said below:

The Glock 19 is the most popular model according to sales. NYPD issue loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124 +P........

My dealer is pushing the FNP-9 on me, it has some good points, but I'm pretty sold on the Glocks for many of the points in your post. The FN is at least a $100 more than what I can buy a Glock for, not an overiding concern, but as they say FRNs don't grow on trees.

Re: G17 or G19?

Depends on your hand size... What fits it best???

I myself being a tad 6'5" and on the bigger build side have pretty big hands... All the Compacts are to small for me, the Subcompats forget it... So I wuld go with the G17...

Also, with the G17 you have a longer distance between front an rear sites... I have found I do better with the longer sites and read that most other people do too... Don't know if its fact for sure, but seems like it for me and the guys I normally shoot with... Maybe get one of each... :)

I myself prefer the G22/35s...

In the interest of keeping my local guys honest, what are you seeing for prices on new G 19's in your area? My local dealer has a new one for $500 w/ 3 factory 15 rnd mags (and 1 year range membership included).

From prices I have seen online it's not the cheapest, but after I factor in shipping and FFL transfer fees for something bought online, the net is around the same price. Plus I get to support the local economy this way.

Re: G17 or G19?

The G19 is a fine design and MANY people seem to think it is the best Glock out there _for them._ I guess I'm just an oddball or maybe it is because I started with a first generation G17. But when I pick up a G19, I immediately start fussing with my pinky. It ends up right on the "cut off" part of the grip. I would actually be happier with the G29 and no pinky contact at all.

So try to shoot both before you buy. If the G19 fits your hands, can't go wrong there.

The Glock I shoot the most has the same size grip as my first G17, the G35. When I find a good deal on .40 S&W, the factory barrel gets used. Otherwise I use a Jarvis barrel in .357 SIG. Got LOTS and LOTS of .357 SIG ammo. Would I carry it as a CCW? No, I'm not that wild and crazy. But I carry it in the woods all the time.

AG_Man - look into a CZ75 !! If you don't like safeties - they do have the decocker model. 15 & 18 round mags available.

Best 9 mm for the price IMO.

Ag_man,

I just happen to have both models. I have one G19 and several G17's. Last year, I needed to divest of some more paper currency and figured it would be tough to go wrong with a box full of Glocks......never will be easier to get or require less paper to buy.

The G17's are in place to serve as true battle pistols....with the plan to be used in full sized holsters....just like police/military....these are our end of the world handguns. They are a big gun - I have no intention of CC these guns. They are for survival.

The G19 is a beautiful sized pistol....not too big and not too small for CC carry....but not really my intended use - as I CC Kel-Tec 3AT (380ACP) daily in my front pocket. I figured the G19 would better fit my wife in a SHTF holster carry situation.....because gals are smaller than men.....G17:Man as G19:Woman.....the G19 feels like a big gun to a gal.

The G19 can be carried in a winter coat pocket if you like....where the G17 is simply too large.

The G17 is really too large for CC....while the G19 if about as large as you would ever want to CC.

If I could only have 1 Glock.....I'd go for the G19.......as it gives the option of CC.

Like I said - I bought the G17's for a specific purpose. I have factory night sights on the G19....I think I had to give $580 for that gun.....the non-night sighted G17's I paid $450 each....but between me and my dad we bought quite a few.

Prices may be better now - but this was during high demand time a little over 1 year ago.

G19 for sure...................

Re: G17 or G19?

G19 here. I can palm a ball but I wanted a simple reliable piece to CC. Many many hundreds of rounds of various loads/quality and never ever a jam or problem.

So, Ag_Man, any thoughts?? What are you leaning towards???

Have you had a chance to shoot either???

If you we're local, I'd let you test drive my G35, or G21, XDM-40, or anyof'em you bring ammo for... ;)

Re: G17 or G19?

Have you thought about a 34?

I guess it does entirely depend on hand size... but I would never want to ccw a 17 or a 19 (or a 34).
That's why they made the 26.
